Sam Gilliam’s canonical Drape paintings expanded upon Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. Suspending stretched lengths of painted canvas from the walls or ceilings of exhibition spaces, Gilliam transformed his medium and the contexts in which it was viewed.
